The idea of the World Series of Poker began in 1969 with an event called the Texas Gambling Reunion. The event was an invitation event sponsored by Tom Moore from San Antonio, Texas, and was held at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno. This inaugural event was won by Crandell Addington. A series of tournaments to be developed by the World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the brainchild of Las Vegas casino owners and poker player Benny Binion.
In 1970, the first WSOP in Binion’s Horseshoe took place as a series of games that included five-card stud, deuce to seven, low-ball draw, razz, seven-card stud, and Texas hold ’em. Rules for the main event at the Texas Hold ’em tournament were made the following year. In 1970, Johnny Moss was chosen by his colleagues as the first “Poker World Champion” and received a silver trophy as a prize.
In 2004, Harrah’s Casinos bought the rights to the World Series of Poker label. Harrah’s also later bought London Clubs International (LCI). LCI operates three casinos in the London area, Fifty, Leicester Square and The Sportsman. After buying the casinos, Harrah’s decided to expand its WSOP label to Europe. World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a series of poker tournaments held regularly every year held in Las Vegas since 2004. World Series of Poker is sponsored by Caesars Entertainment Corporation and until early 2010 it was known as Harrah’s Entertainment. It began in 1970, when Benny Binion invited seven professional poker players to Horseshoe Casino to play in a single tournament. The tournament has determined start and stop times, and a winner is determined by a secret vote of seven players.
In 2004 it was acquired by Harrah’s Entertainment (now Caesars Entertainment) by buying Binion’s Horseshoe. Harrah’s Entertainment also retained the rights to the Horseshoe and World Series of Poker brands by selling hotels and casinos to the MTR Gaming Group. In 2005 Harrah’s Entertainment announced that the 2005 Series event would be held at Harrah’s Rio Hotel and Casino, which is not far from Las Vegas Strip.
The last two days of the main event in 2005 were held downtown in what is now known as “Binion’s” which is operated by MTR in celebrating the centennial of the founding of Las Vegas. The WSOP also added the Tournament of Champions (TOC) to the television series that was first won by Annie Duke as the winner in the “winner-take-all” event.
In 2017, the WSOP consisted of 74 events, with most of the major poker variants competing in each tournament. But in recent years, more than half of the shows are variants of Texas Hold ’em. The event traditionally takes place for one day or several days in a row during the series in June and July. However, starting in 2008, the Main Event final match was postponed until November. The final tournament at the 2012 and 2016 main events began in October due to the United States presidential election. In May 2017, the World Series of Poker changed the concept of Nine November and returned to the old rules by holding a main event in July.
